When clients walk into our Dublin showroom, one of the first things they ask is:
“Should I go for a lab-grown diamond or a natural one?”
It’s a great question — and one we’ve answered more times than we can count.
We decided to put our thoughts into a proper blog post, because this topic comes up almost daily. And the truth is: there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But hopefully, by sharing our perspective — built from years of helping clients choose meaningful pieces — you’ll walk away feeling confident about your own decision.
🌱 What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments using advanced technological processes that replicate the conditions under which natural diamonds form. These diamonds are made of the same carbon atoms arranged in the diamond crystal structure, making them chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds.
Pros:
Cost-Effective: Lab-grown diamonds are typically 70% to 90% less expensive than natural diamonds of similar size and quality.
Ethical and Sustainable: They are produced without the environmental and ethical concerns associated with mining.
Quality Control: The controlled environment allows for fewer inclusions and defects.
Cons:
Resale Value: Lab-grown diamonds generally have lower resale value compared to natural diamonds.
Emotional Value: Some clients feel that natural diamonds carry a certain romantic or historical significance that lab-grown diamonds lack.
🌍 What Are Natural Diamonds?
Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions deep within the Earth's mantle. They are then brought close to the Earth's surface through volcanic activity and mined from the Earth.
Pros:
Historical Significance: Each natural diamond is a unique piece of Earth's history.
Resale Value: Natural diamonds tend to retain their value better over time.
Variety: They come in a wider range of sizes, shapes, and colors.
Cons:
Cost: Natural diamonds are more expensive due to their rarity and the cost of mining.
Ethical Concerns: Mining can have environmental and ethical implications, though many diamonds are now sourced responsibly.
🧐 Our Personal Take
Peter and I have worked with both lab-grown and natural diamonds, and we believe each has its place depending on your priorities.
If you're looking for a more affordable, ethically sourced option, lab-grown diamonds are an excellent choice. They offer the same brilliance and durability as natural diamonds without the higher price tag.
On the other hand, if you're drawn to the idea of owning a piece of Earth's history and are considering the long-term value, a natural diamond might be more appealing.
Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference, values, and budget. We're here to guide you through the options and help you find the perfect diamond that aligns with your desires.
